Up On The Housetop

Civil War era fun fact learned at tonight’s Christmas concert by the Westerville Symphony:

The song Up On The Housetop was written by Ohioan Benjamin Hanby who premiered the song in Richmond, Indiana in 1864. He had previously resigned his job as a minister because he scandalously believed that church services should include music, so he resigned to open a singing school during the Civil War. He then had a bunch of music published by a company headquartered in Chicago. Unfortunately, the great Chicago Fire burned down their building and most of his music was lost.

Up On The Housetop made it though because it was already so popular. In tonight’s concert, we heard a world-premier arrangement of that song. It was really good!

Pretty cool, huh?
